Initial results from the 2009‐2010 Literacy Leaps project at the Hatch Valley Middle School are promising. The mean reading scores for the sixth grade class rose an entire year for the fall semester. The early fall mean for the sixth grade class was 3.2 (third grade, spring semester). The mean score in early December for the sixth grade was 4.2 (fourth grade, spring semester). The other grades at the school rose as well. The mean reading scores for the seventh and eighth grade students increased one semester for the fall. The mean score for the eighth grade student rose from 5.1 to 5.2 (fifth grade, fall semester to fifth grade, spring semester), with the seventh grade mean following a similar pattern (from 4.1 to 4.2.).
