Cobre Consolidated Schools encompasses 1,045 square miles of Grant County, east of Silver City in Southwestern New Mexico. The CCS serves approximately 1400 students from towns and villages including Bayard, Santa Clara, Hurley, and San Lorenzo. The region is sparsely populated, serving little more than 1 student per square mile with a student/teacher ratio of 13:1. Bayard, the center of the school district along NM State Highway 180, north of I-10, lies approximately 95 miles northwest of Las Cruces, the nearest city.
