Calling itself “the friendliest place on earth,” the City of Alamogordo depends largely on Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range for its economic sustenance, with Holloman alone employing over 6000 people as of 2008 with over 2,000 indirectly employed (support) personnel. Retail and food service industries are the next largest employers, owing to tourism and a large number of military retirees living in the area (est. 6700).

Known for high technology, including the nearby Trinity Site where the United States detonated the first atomic bomb, Alamogordo gained more recent media attention for its church-sponsored, public book burnings in 2001. Targeted books included the Harry Potter series and the works of William Shakespeare—a sign of conflict between progressive and traditional cultures in the area. Today, the APS About Kids publication of APS strongly promotes “positive change.”
